Book template designer: design your own PDF, Word, EPUB and HTML style
A template decides how every page of your book looks: the fonts, the size of each heading, the colors of links, code and tables, the space between lines and the margins around the text. Most books only need a small change to an existing style, such as a different accent color or a larger body font.
This designer starts from one of the ready-made Business, Academic, Technical or Creative styles. Change the colors, fonts and sizes, set the line and paragraph spacing, and choose the paper size, orientation and margins. The preview updates as you type, and for PDF you can render the real title page and a chapter page.
When you are happy, download the design as a small template .json file. On the home page, choose that file under Document style, Upload template, and your book uses it for PDF, Word, EPUB or HTML. The file stays on your device, and you can edit it here again later.
Use your template in a book: download the .json file, then on the home page open Document style in step 3 and choose Upload template (.json).
Create a book with your templateHow to use it
- Pick a starting style: a type such as Business or Technical, and one of its color palettes.
- Change the colors, fonts and sizes, the spacing, and the page settings in the four tabs, and check the live preview.
- Download the template .json file, then upload it under Document style when you create your book.
Worked example
Start from Technical, set the primary color to a dark green, raise the body text to 12 pt, choose 1.25 line spacing and wide margins, then download technical-green.template.json and upload it when you create a PDF.
Questions
- Do I need an account, and are my designs stored?
- No. The designer runs in your browser and nothing is saved on our servers. Your design exists only in the template .json file you download.
- How do I use a downloaded template in a book?
- Open the home page, upload your Markdown, go to the Template and format step, open Document style and choose Upload template (.json). The style is previewed straight away. Press Apply to keep it.
- Does one template work for every format?
- Yes. The same file styles PDF, Word, EPUB and HTML. Page size, orientation, margins and page numbers affect PDF and Word, while EPUB and HTML reflow to the reader's screen.
- Which fonts can I use?
- Choose from a fixed list of fonts, including Noto Sans, Source Sans, Playfair Display, Times, Georgia, Calibri and monospace options. If a reader's device or our PDF server lacks a font, a similar one is used instead.
