Checker

Markdown manuscript checker

A manuscript that looks fine in an editor can still produce a broken book. An unclosed code fence swallows everything after it, and a skipped heading level gives an odd contents list.

Paste your Markdown and the checker lists problems with line numbers. It looks for an unclosed code fence, skipped heading levels, repeated headings, links to headings that do not exist, tables whose rows have the wrong number of cells, remote images, and a missing heading structure.

These are the same rules MarkdownBooks applies when you convert a book, so a clean result here means fewer surprises later. Because MarkdownBooks takes a single .md file, every image is reported: images are replaced by their alt text in the finished book. See the manuscript standards guide in Help for the full list of rules.

How to use it

  1. Paste your Markdown.
  2. Read each finding and its line number.
  3. Fix the problems and check again.

Worked example

Finds a skipped heading level and a broken link.

Questions

What are E and W codes?
E means an error that stops a conversion. W means a warning that does not.
Why is every image reported?
A single Markdown file is uploaded, so images cannot be included yet. They are replaced by their alt text.
Is my text uploaded?
No. The checks run in your browser.
Is a clean result a guarantee?
No. It covers structure, not spelling or layout.
