Book & Print Tools › Multi-file manuscript merger
Merge Markdown chapter files into one manuscript
Many writers keep one file per chapter. A converter wants one manuscript, so the files need to be joined in the right order first.
Add your .md files, drag them into order, and set a heading shift for each if needed. A shift of 1 turns every # heading into ##, which is useful when each file starts at level 1 but you want the files to sit under a part heading. Headings inside code blocks are not touched, and a front matter block at the top of a file is removed from every file.
The merged text appears in the box below and can be copied or downloaded as one file. Your files are read in your browser and never uploaded. Check the result with the manuscript checker before converting it.
How to use it
- Add the Markdown files.
- Drag them into the right order and set any heading shift.
- Download the merged file.
Worked example
Three chapter files become one manuscript with the chapters in your order.
Questions
- Are my files uploaded?
- No. They are read and merged in your browser.
- What does the heading shift do?
- It adds levels to every heading in that file, up to level 6.
- What happens to front matter?
- The metadata block at the top of each file is removed. Add one at the top of the merged file.
- Can I use zip files?
- Not here. Add the .md files themselves. MarkdownBooks itself accepts one .md file.
Files you choose here are processed in your browser and are not uploaded.
